What is scabies?

Scabies is a skin condition that is caused by a small mite (Sarcoptes scabie). It is contagious. It is caused when the mite associates itself with the human skin and lays eggs which hatch to form adult mites. As such the symptoms lasts for months or even years. It causes severe itching. It spreads through physical contact.

Symptoms

It takes around 2-6 weeks for symptoms to appear after getting infested. Common symptoms include

  • Intense itching especially during nights
  • Lesions or blisters or insect bites
  • Skin Rashes
  • Skin becomes red, dry and swollen

What does scabies look like?

Infestation of the skin by the human itch mite. The initial symptom are red, raised bumps that are intensely itchy. A magnifying glass will reveal short, wavy lines of red skin, which are the burrows made by the mites.

They may also be accompanied by “burrows,” or thin gray, brown, or red lines that radiate from the bumps. They may be hard to see, and can look like scratch marks

Is scabies contagious?

It can be spread in the following ways:

  • skin-to-skin
    contact, such as holding hands

    personal contact, like as having sexual intercourse
  • sharing
    clothing, bedding, or towels that have been used by someone with a scabies
    infection

Since scabies is mostly
transmitted through direct physical contact, the infestation can easily be
passed on to family members, friends, and sexual partners. The infestation may
also spread quickly in:

  • schools
  • Colleges
  • nursing homes
  • rehab facilities
  • sports locker
    rooms
  • prisons

What should you not eat when you have scabies?

The only way to keep away
is to avoid prolonged, direct skin-to-skin
contact with a person who has them. But You also
want to avoid touching items, like bedding or
clothing, that the person has used to be . If you, or

exposed to it, seek treatment right away

Does hot water kill scabies?

Scabies mites can die when exposed to high heat. To kill scabies mites on items such as bedding, clothing, and towels: Machine-wash the items using hot water and dry them in a clothes dryer using the hot cycle for at least 20 minutes
